Abstract

The service sector has emerged as the driving force of India’s economic transformation, accounting for more than half of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and positioning the country as a major player in the global economy. Within this broad sector, the Information Technology (IT) industry has proven to be a central pillar by contributing substantially to GDP, generating employment, fostering innovation, and enhancing foreign exchange earnings. The rise of India as an IT outsourcing hub has not only reshaped its economic profile but has also influenced global trade patterns in knowledge-intensive services. This paper examines the evolution, significance, and challenges of the service sector in India with special reference to the IT industry. Using secondary data and a review of existing literature, it highlights the IT sector’s contribution to national development, identifies trends in employment and exports, and outlines the socio-economic implications of India’s IT-led growth.
