Geographical and Strategic Significance of the Indian Ocean: General Analysis in the Context of India

Abstract

A.T. Mahan has mentioned some important facts for the growth of the nine powers, which include geographical location, physical shape, territorial expansion, population, national character and government institutions which also have scientific and industrial potential, no nation without benefits. If we put India on this criterion, then India's location is definitely going to make India strong. Undoubtedly, India's position is ideal for naval power. Due to its peninsular position, it affects the vast ocean. Several ports are located on its coastline. However, apart from the Gulf of Kutch, it lacks a protected marine area. India can establish a powerful navy because of its maritime location. The strategic location of the Indian Ocean is mainly the center of attraction of the superpowers, which is a matter of main concern from the Indian strategic point of view.

ए.टी. माहन ने नौ शक्ति के वृद्धि के लिए कुछ महत्वपूर्ण तथ्यों का उल्लेख किया है, जिसमें भौगोलिक स्थिति, भौतिक आकृति, क्षेत्रीय विस्तार, जनसंख्या, राष्ट्रीय चरित्र तथा सरकारी संस्थान जिनमें वैज्ञानिक तथा औद्योगिक क्षमता भी जुड़ी है, लाभों के बिना कोई राष्ट्र समुद्र पर अधिकार नहीं कर सकता यदि हम भारत को इस कसौटी पर कसें तो भारत की अवस्थिति निश्चित रूप से भारत को सबल बनाने वाली है। निःसंदेह भारत की स्थिति नौशक्ति के लिए आदर्श स्थिति है। अपनी प्रायद्वीपीय स्थिति के कारण विशाल समुद्र को प्रभावित करता है। इसके तटरेखा पर अनेक बंदरगाह स्थित हैं। यद्यपि कच्छ की खाड़ी के अलावा इसके पास संरक्षित समुद्री क्षेत्र की कमी है। भारत अपने सामुद्रिक अवस्थिति के कारण एक शक्तिशाली नौ सेना को स्थापित कर सकता है। हिन्द महासागर की सामरिक स्थिति मुख्य रूप से महाशक्तियों के आकर्षण का केन्द्र जो कि भारतीय रणनीतिक दृष्टि से मुख्य चिंता का विषय है।
