Abstract

Biodiversity is essential for sustaining ecological balance and supporting life on the planet. It contributes directly to human welfare by providing food, clean water, medicine, and vital ecosystem services. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), introduced in 2015, highlight the significance of biodiversity conservation, especially within SDG-13 (Climate Action), SDG-14 (Life Below Water), and SDG-15 (Life on Land). Yet, factors such as deforestation, urban expansion, industrialization, and climate change pose serious obstacles to aligning biodiversity conservation with the SDG agenda. At the same time, new opportunities are emerging through sustainable farming practices, local community involvement, ecotourism initiatives, and global partnerships. This paper examines the link between biodiversity and sustainable development, identifies key challenges, and outlines opportunities to harmonize ecological preservation with developmental needs.
