In ancient India, the science of politics was known by several terms like Rajadharma, Rajyasastra, Nitisastra, Arthasastra and Dandaniti. The paper attempts to understand and analyse Danda and Dandaniti as contextualised in the ancient Indian political philosophy both for its conceptual connotations and pragmatic applications. This analysis might provide significant insights into how the state evolved in ancient India and also find some of its linkages to the contemporary state.
