Abstract

Gender equality refers to a state in society where women and men enjoy equal rights in marriage, social, and economic aspects. Conversely, gender inequality implies that one gender is given more importance over the other. Gender inequality is observed in various fields across the globe, and the field of music is no exception. In Indian music, the number of male singers and instrumentalists has historically been higher than that of females. In the Vedic period, women participated equally in all three forms of art—singing, instrumental music, and dance. During the Ramayana era, women were also granted equal rights in music. The Bhakti period showcased a harmonious blend of singing and dance in the musical devotion of Meerabai. In contemporary times, Doordarshan (Indian national television) plays a crucial role in promoting cultural education and music, aiming to reduce gender inequality. Singers and musicians, irrespective of gender, are now allowed to participate equally in programs.

Abstract in Hindi Language: लैंगिक समानता का अर्थ है कि समाज में महिलाओं एवं पुरुषों को समान रूप से विवाहित, सामाजिक एवं आर्थिक रूप से एक समान अधिकार प्राप्त हो तथा लैंगिक विषमता अथवा और समानता का तात्पर्य है स्त्रियों एवं पुरुषों में से किसी एक को एक दूसरे की तुलना में अधिक महत्व दिया जाना ।आज विश्व के अन्य क्षेत्रों में लैंगिक असमानता को देखा जाता है। यह स्थिति संगीत में भी दृष्टिगोचर होती है। भारतीय संगीत में आज तक जो भी गायक वादक हुए हैं उनमें पुरुषों की संख्या स्त्रियों की अपेक्षा अधिक है। वैदिक काल की स्त्रियां गायन वादननृत्य तीनों कलाओं में भाग लेती थी। रामायण काल में भी स्त्रियों को संगीत में समान अधिकार प्राप्त था। भक्ति काल में गायन एवं नृत्य का संगम मीराबाई के ही संगीत साधना में प्राप्त होता है। वर्तमान में दूरदर्शन का सांस्कृतिक शिक्षा एवं संगीत के प्रसार में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका दृष्टिगत होती है। जिससे कि लैंगिक असमानता को दूर किया जा सके। गायक एवं गायिका को समान रूप से कार्यक्रमों में प्रतिभाग करने की छूट है।
